Our team is happy to announce the first successful testing event of the Vegvisir Mixed Reality Situational Awareness System! It was a significant milestone for our company with excellent feedback to our product.
We conducted 3 days of experimentation in the vicinity of the 1st Infantry Brigade at the old Tapa airfield in Estonia. The experiment was supported by the Estonian Ministry of Defence according to a grant agreement signed in 2021. The 1st Infantry Brigade Scouts Battalion supported the event with armored personnel carrier Patria Sisu XA-188 6x6 and infantry fighting vehicle CV-9035.
We tested the Driver Solution that consists of 3 close range sensors, 1 driver sensor, a mission computer and display goggles. The driver sensor was mounted in the front and the close range sensors covered the sides and rear to enable full 360-degree vision.
Test driving was conducted on an airfield, gravel roads and off road with mostly flat grassland and some man made slopes. The speed varied from 40-60 km/h. Test drives were both shorter and longer. The longer drive lasted 40 minutes and it was successful without any negative effects to the driver.
On each test day both drivers and passengers used the system. A sample of almost 40 participants enabled us to get many people with very different baseline assessments about level of discomfort and personal history of nausea during transportation. They pointed out the much better field of view compared to the periscopes.
While sitting in the back, people with mechanized squad leaders background mentioned that the awareness and understanding of surroundings was at a very high level with the Vegvisir system compared to the regular setup. They concluded that Vegvisir helped to improve the situational awareness and make better decisions when dismounting.
The people with severe regular nausea effects, for example while riding on a bus, did not notice any discomfort during the use of the system. While driving uphill diagonally or on a side slope none of the participants felt discomfort due to very unnatural body position while wearing the system in a tilted platform.
After the testing we can conclude that the development of the system has been successful and we received great feedback from the participants. The work continues and we will soon be able to share news from the next testing session in upcoming months.
